In the year 2000, planet Earth was struck by a disaster known as the "Second Impact", the world's population was decreased by half in the aftermath. Reports stated that it was caused by meteorites impact in the Antartica region... of which final result was the melting of the polar ice cap... But further investigation proved otherwise...

15 years later, the year 2015, while the world is being restored, mysterious giant entities called "Angels" suddenly appear in Tokyo-3, a technologically advanced city under development in the Hakone area, Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan.
However, this two occurances are only a continuation of a single event that last for decades... as numerous investigations starting to uncover pieces of the truth about the cause of the "Second Impact"...
NERV, a United Nations special task force, is ordered to engage these Angels with their humanoid fighting machines, "Evangelions" piloted by some 14-year-olds, acting as the "soul" of the "Evangelions". They are the world's last hope for humanity...
